Watercolor Insect Kit – Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Choose three colours for your palette.
Pick three colours that complement each other and will create a balanced look for your insect.

Tip: Activate the Paint
Use a wet brush to gently activate the paint blobs on your palette. Swirl the brush in the paint to lift pigment.

Step 2: Paint the large areas of the insect with your three colours.
Use plenty of water to achieve a soft, diluted watercolor effect. At this stage, keep the colours separate—if they touch while still wet, they will bleed into each other. Let this layer dry completely before moving on.

Tip: Make sure your colour is light, but your brush is not too wet when you paint. Otherwise, you will have to wait too long for it to dry.

Step 3: Mix the same colours with less water to create stronger tones.
You will use these more concentrated colours to add patterns and textures.

Step 4: Paint patterns and textures.
Use the stronger colours to create details, patterns, and textures. You can lightly sketch guidelines in pencil before painting to help guide your design.

Step 5: Add shadows and highlights for depth.
• Paint a shadow on the left side of each insect to create a three-dimensional effect. Use a very diluted black, so it appears soft and grey.
• Add highlights on the right side of the insect’s body, head, and legs using strong white watercolor or a gouache white mixture.

Let everything dry completely, and your watercolor insects are ready!
